Critique on Office Hours

Learning how to speak in front of people became more appealing to me after reading The Commuter’s article on Dana Emerson. The question and answer story began with telling what classes Emerson teaches. I liked that it went straight into the best parts of these classes.

This section kept my attention by Emerson’s fun explanations such as, “the classroom is like a reality TV show.” She explained, “you never know what’s going to happen.” After investigating the classes, writer, Max Brown, told more about Emerson‘s life. I enjoyed reading about personal interests because this made her seem more personable to me.

The article later dives into Emerson’s previous work in politics and business. I would have liked to see more information about how Emerson got into teaching after such a different career. Did the speech interest come from her experience in politics?

Time remains unclear throughout the article as well. When did Emerson work in California and when did she start at LBCC? Is she a new teacher or does she carry much experience?

Either way, this story did draw me in and seemed to bring a comfort to those who might be nervous about taking a speech class. Speech classes (at least with Emerson) don't appear so bad after these Office Hours.
